The following is indeed a short story.
The amplified voice of authority from the pulpit carried to the rearmost pew. "Be not deceived! Temptation is everywhere! I tell you the devil and his demons stand outside these very doors, and they are not disguised. Repent your sins and let no man lead you astray with lies. Evil can be seen in the eyes, heard within false promises, and presented to you in many forms. None among you will save your soul by saying, 'I did not recognize sin.' I tell you that the evil ones are your neighbors, your coworkers, and the people in the streets. They will tempt you. They await your departure from the light and life of this house into the sinner's world of darkness and death. Be strong, beloved!"
The speaker was nearly screaming. "I ask you now, have you the strength to resist? Have you the faith to stand fast . . . nay, to attack the wrongness, and to show Satan that you will not carry his burden of sin?"
He paused, gazing out over his congregation. In unison, the bolts of two hundred .30 caliber automatic rifles slammed shut. The ushers opened the doors.
