I started reading the Bible 10 years ago, but it was only two years ago when I finally learned about the difference between the Old Covenant, (the 10 commandments), and the New Covenant.
The purpose of the ten commandments is to show that we are all sinners and are in need of a Savior. The ten commandments was not given to us thru Moses to make us godly, but to expose our ungodliness.
Some may say, "but I have not committed adultery, or I have not killed anyone". The Bible says, "anyone who lusts for a woman in his mind has already committed adultery and anyone who has gotten angry at his brorther has committed murder".
Break one of the ten commandments and you have broken the ten. If you die without asking Jesus to be your Savior, you will be separted from God for eternity. (in a laymans language - you will go to hell).
Consider what Paul said to Peter. "........For no one will ever be saved by obeying the law (the ten commandments). Gal. 2:16 (NLT). This is because the purpose of the ten commandments is simply to show that in the end we will realize that we cannot comply with ALL the ten commants. We need a Savior period.
The NEW COVENANT
"And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven's most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. This is the NEW, life-giving way that Christ has opened for us through the sacred curtain, by means of his death for us" Heb. 10:19-20 (NLT).
Jesus' death on the cross in our place paid off our sin-debt to God. His shed blood now covers our sins from the sight of our heavenly Father. To have this covering, we need to admit that we are sinners, change the direction of our life, believe that Jesus died on the cross for us, that He was buried and on the third day rose from the dead and after 40 days ascended to heaven, body and spirit. And finally ask Jesus to come into our heart and be our Lord and Savior!
