The incident made me wonder if there were, indeed, circumstances where it was okay to lie.

Some 25 years ago, I made a terrible mistake by telling the TRUTH to one of my best girlfriends about her womanizing boyfriend.  To make a long story short, my girlfriend wanted to know what I thought of the new man in her life.  Instead of lying and saying something like, “He seems like a good match for you,” I had to go and tell her the truth.  I believed she deserved to know about his flirtatious behavior and how he tried to get me to sneak away for a rendezvous during her birthday party.

But rather than see him for the scumbag that he was, she turned around and accused me of being the seductress.  She questioned what I had said or done to entice him.  I became the villain and her archenemy and she stopped speaking to me.

That incident made me wonder if there were, indeed, circumstances where it was okay to lie.  I never had any intention of hurting my friend—and I certainly didn’t want to see her get hurt by a man who seemed to show little respect for her feelings.

So here is my question to you:  How would you have handled the same situation?  Would you have said anything or just kept silent?  Would your actions then be any different when you were younger compared to what they would be today?  MINE WOULD.  I’m certain I would’ve confronted him in front of her and put him on the spot to see how he would respond.

A few years ago, I heard from my long lost friend.  She called out of the blue just to chat for old time’s sake.

When asked, the truth is a must. A friend that easily lost was perhaps, not a true friend afterall.
