Mamma works for a white family, she takes care of the house and the little white girls with their fancy dresses and toys! Sometimes if Mrs Smith is feeling especially charitable she will give us some of the old toys and clothes.

It makes me sad that we’s  gotta to go to schools where it is like an ice cube, and we’s get books that have pages that are falling out.  Mamma says there was a time that our kind didn’t get to go to school at all so at least this is progress, but this don’t feel like no progress to me.  White kids go to nice schools, and take fancy buses, we don’t get to take no fancy buses, and our schools are little more than shacks, that some of the K.K.K men try to burn down!  I don’t understand how those men can have so much hate for a bunch of colored kids, but they do!! Mamma says maybe they don’t understand us, in my mind I says they are just stupid, but Mamma would whip me with a hickory stick if I told her that.

Mamma works for a white family, she takes care of the house and the little white girls with their fancy dresses and toys!  Sometimes if Mrs Smith is feeling especially charitable she will give us some of the old toys and clothes.  Mamma says it’s a good thing because I am growing like a weed.  She says if I don’t stop growing I will be taller than Pappa.  I don’t know about that, Pappa has to duck his head to get through our door!  He never complains though, like Mamma he believes we gotta thank Jesus for what we have.  I do thank him, but do people really have to be full of so much hate.

I heard Mamma and Daddy talking in whispers the other night, about another lynching a black kid, who did nothing wrong but said howdy to a white girl!  Saying Howdy should not mean someone gets lynched, hung up like a regular murderer, but the k.k.k just ain’t thinking like that.  In facts I don’t think they think at all.

To Be Continued!
