Author/novelist and veteran sportswriter Gary Ludwig has captured the life and times of auto racing legend Tommy Hinnershitz in this well written and researched biography.
Ludwig lived in Alsace Township until he was 11 years old (1944–55). His novel Mexico Road is loosely based on characters, locations and situations taking place along Mexico Road (a dirt road at the time) that's located in the township.
Tommy Hinnershitz was a long time resident of Alsace Township, living on his farm near the neighboring town of Oley. He has been called by the great racecar driver A. J. Foyt, and other prominent members of the sport, the greatest dirt track Sprint car driver of all time. Interest in his life and career and the history of American automobile racing, is worldwide. In 1939 he won the first feature race ever run at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He went on to win over 100 feature races over a career that spanned five decades, primarily racing on the state and county fair dirt horse tracks. He raced in the Indianapolis 500 four times. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
