David didn't believe in God, much less an afterlife. Until....

David

David didn’t believe in God. He didn’t believe there was an after-life, either. He believed that when you died, that was it. The worms ate your body, and nobody heard from you ever again. When David joined the United States Air Force, he even had them put it into his records. He was officially labeled an “atheist.”

Years after leaving the Air Force, David had an occasion to reconsider his beliefs. Several months after his father passed away, David was traveling from his home in Gainesville, Florida, to his job thirty miles away. He drove along, minding his own business, when suddenly, he came upon a horrific accident in the middle of the highway. There was no time to stop, and David knew he was about to become part of the multi-car pileup. As he slammed on his brakes and tried to protect his face, David’s car was suddenly filled with the scent of Brute cologne. His car went airborne and through the accident, never touching one other vehicle. When he landed safely on the other side, David looked in his rearview mirror and saw bodies of people lying on the road. Emergency personnel were everywhere, but all were focused on the job at hand. Nobody seemed to notice David or his car. He kept on driving.

The only person David ever knew who always wore Brute was his dad. Had his dad just saved him from severe injury or possibly even death? As far as he believed, all that remained of the man were the ashes kept safely in an urn at his sister’s house in Colorado.

When David arrived at work and got out of his car, his buddies all began razzing him about wearing cologne to work.

“Whoa, Man, when did you start wearing Brute?” one of the guys asked him, fanning the air in front of his nose.

“It wasn’t me, Bill. It was my dad,” David responded in a mild voice..

“What?” the guys gathered ‘round, while David reported his experience.

As if that wasn’t enough to make one reconsider the existence of God, two months later, while again traveling to work, a woman sped through a stop sign to David’s right, and ran right in front of him. He never had a chance to put on his brakes. Once again, the scent of Brute filled the car, and David went through the rear end of her car. It was as if the molecules of both vehicles just meshed, and there was no collision. When he came out on the other side of the intersection, David slammed on his brakes and eased over to the side of the road.

After two appearances of what seemed to be his Dad’s spirit, David prayed to a God that he had been convinced never existed. He thanked Him for sending his dad or his angels to save him. To this day, David will never forget that God does exist, and protects even the lowliest non-believer. He also knows that there is an after-life, and can’t wait to see his dad in person to say “Thanks.”

Good story. I really enjoyed it and hope you keep writing. I love stories about ghosts and the hereafter as long as they are not too scary.
