Don't ever give up has become more than a motto to me. It's my way of life.
Being a writer was my dream from age ten. It wasn't until I was in my thirties that I finished my first novel and realized there was more to that dream--getting published. I went through the usual channels, sending out query letters, full manuscripts, contacting agents. The whole lot. I didn't get so much as a nibble, but I didn't let that stop me. As each rejection letter came in, I sent the manuscript back out and went to work on another novel.
Then came the day that I asked myself a question: If I never got a word published, would I continue to write? The immediate answer was a resounding "Yes!". I knew that I'd write as long as I was able to lift a pen and put it to paper--metiphorically. I actually use a laptop.
My story has a happy ending because, not a year after I answered my own question, I landed a contract on IF TRUTH BE TOLD. When it had been out for 6 months, the publisher asked for another manuscript. Then another publisher offered a contract on LIVE Ringer, the first in a mystery series. The second in the series, LIVE Ammo, came out in April 2012, with the third, LIVE in Person, soon to follow.
The moral is that I never gave up. I continued to believe in myself and kept writing. Now I have four books in print and several more marketable manuscripts sitting on my shelf. It makes me feel wealthy beyond belief! |
