Success Story |

Two communities bridging a gap... My success story is multifaceted. It involves the efforts and dedication of a professor at Vassar University in Poughkeepsie, Lawrence Mamiya, a handful of bright caring Vassar students, a small group of hard-working dedicated inmates from Otisville correctional facility and myself, Dennis DeRose, Transitional Services coordinator at Otisville.
We meet in a classroom Friday afternoons for three hours. We discuss important issues of the day; we talk about our similarities and our differences. We consider this experiential learning at its best, each one... teach one.
It has been said that this class is not at all therapeutic and a total waste of time. I, for one, beg to differ. I could show you many instances where the lives of Vassar students and those of ex-felons from Otisville have been changed forever for the good of society.
I challenge anyone to prove me wrong as we continue, two communities bridging a gap. |
