My early experiences with publishing were nothing short of a nightmare. I'm sure you've heard tell of authors and their rejection slips. I was one of them.
It wasn't until I first took my work to the web, that I found a fan base and it wasn't until Alaric Swifthand, my very first fantasy serial on the now defunct page Dragonsclaw, that I found any notoriety.
Now, years later, I have four ebooks with two e-publishing companies and a print version of one of my books, strangely enough Alaric Swifthand, on the way.
Through hard work and quite a bit of luck, I've appeared all over the web and now write full time. Being able to leave retail behind to become a full time writer didn't come without a price, nor could I have made the transition without tremendous support.
The support came from dana, who opened her heart and home to me. It meant leaving behind most of my possessions and traveling around the world, from New York City to Moonah, Tasmania, but in the end, it was so much more than worth it.
Today my stories, articles, essays and poems are all over the Internet. My book A Creative Edge: Tales of Speculation (Twilight Times Publications) won a Dream Realm Award for best anthology. Alaric Swifthand (also Twilight Times) was a Dream Realm Award finalist in the fantasy catagory. A Creative Edge also finaled in the Eppies. I've won awards for poetry and short stories as well.
There is a lesson here, for those of you that want to take it. If you work hard enough, if you believe with true fervor, you can do anything. But believe me, you'll have to make sacrifices along the way. |
