  Rosemarie Skaine's Success Story
Set Your Sail, Capture the Winds, Stay the Course.

_Power and Gender: Issues in Sexual Dominance and Harassment_, my first book, began its journey in the late 1970s. It was first a small pamphlet called _Sexual Harassment: Questions and Answers_. It was written to augment workshops I gave on sexual harassment. Back then, sexual harassment had only recently been given a name. At the same time, I coauthored articles on sexual harassment in national scholarly journals and presented papers at scholarly meetings. In the early 1990s, I revised and enlarged my small pamphlet twice. It was now a small book. All this time I worked full-time on the staff of a nearby university.

The first revision with its kelly green cover marked a turning point. One cold winter day, a university official asked me to come to his office to discuss my “green” book. I shall always remember his kindness and inspiration. With his encouragement and guidance, I revised the green book. With its new cover, now rich grey, _Sexual Harassment: Questions and Answers_ was distributed to administrators and others campus wide.

When the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings in the U.S. Senate and the Tailhook ‘91 Symposium caught the attention the nation, I decided to write a larger book. Working full time left little time some days for writing. During this time I discovered the importance of setting my sail, catching the winds and staying the course. I took the attitude that I would accomplish at least one thing each day on the book. Some days I could only check the accuracy of an endnote or proofread.

Slowly, the manuscript grew. One day my mentor, the university official, said, “Rosemarie, I think it is time for a publisher’s opinion.”

Now a large manuscript, _Power and Gender_ began the search for a publisher. I submitted it to three publishers. Christmas 1994 brought a very special gift. McFarland Publishers in Jefferson, North Carolina offered me a contract for _Power and Gender_. I accepted immediately. Receiving McFarland’s contract offer remains one of my fondest memories as a writer. I never dreamed at the time that _Power and Gender_ would be the first of eight books. McFarland asked me to shorten the manuscript, so I had more work to do. In July 1995, the rewriting was complete and the revised manuscript sent to McFarland.

A year later, in July 1996, my husband brought an unopened box to my office and placed it on my desk. When the box was opened, beautiful red covers beamed the power of the written word they held within. I was overwhelmed by the excitement of holding my first book. I now knew first hand what one mentor had said, “There’s nothing quite like an author with that first book in hand.”

_Power and Gender_ assumed a life of its own. It journeyed to libraries of colleges and universities here and abroad and undertook its mission to educate. In its very first year, in September 1996, The Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America gave _Power and Gender_ the award for being an “Outstanding book on the Subject of Human Rights in North America.”

_Power and Gender_ is a success story. Its journey continues. It continues to educate.
