Welcome Home Little Seed March 29,2011
One hot summer day, on the way to the park, a little girl named Sunshine bought some sunflower seeds to snack on.
As she rode her bike along the grassy path she filled her mouth with those seeds. One by one she would crack them open and spit out the empty shells. Every once in a while she would accidentally spit out a whole one.
One of these whole seeds landed in a warm sunny patch of rich moist dirt. A little boy playing soccer stepped on that little seed and pushed it into the ground. Everyday the sprinklers at the park would come on and keep the soil nice and wet. Everyday the sun would shine and warm the earth.
After a week or so, Little Seed, began to change. Safe under the ground all warm and wet, his shell cracked open and tiny little roots reached down into the soft earth. From the top of his shell a little green sprout poked through the dirt and reached towards the sun. Everyday his straight green stalk grew taller and stronger. He grew beautiful leaves that waved in the breeze. After many weeks a beautiful flower bud formed at the top of his stalk. One unusually bright morning the bud sprang open to reveal a huge yellow sunflower. What a happy face! So open and willing to receive the light.
As the days of summer passed, many birds, bugs, and critters came to visit. The bees would spread the pollen. The birds would feast on the many seeds that filled the center of the sunflower. Some of the seeds that fell to the ground were eaten by bunnies and squirrels. Little Seed had provided so much for his animal friends…even shade on a hot sunny day.
At the end of summer the beautiful sunflower was starting to fade. Most of his leaves had turned brown and that big yellow flower had lost its petals. As the once strong stalk became brittle and weak the sunflower laid down on the ground and rested.
Over time, with rain and wind, the sunflower seemed to turn to dust and blow away.
What no one could see was the magic that was happening just out of sight.
One Little Seed was had found it’s way into the rich dirt.
“Welcome home Little Seed” said the happy earth!
And once again the process began. Soon there would be another beautiful sunflower, another safe, nourishing place for the bees, birds, and critters of the earth. Once again the cycle of life was playing out…perfectly…effortlessly….right on schedule!
The End
