Jim West Thrillers

Cold Winter's Kill is a fast paced thriller that takes place in the scenic mountains of Lincoln County, New Mexico and throws Jim West into a race against time to find and save the daughter of an old friend from the clutches of a determined killer.

COLD WINTER’S KILL is a fast paced thriller that takes place in the scenic mountains of Lincoln County, New Mexico and throws Jim West into a race against time to find and save Melissa, the daughter of an old friend from the clutches of a determined killer.

West is drawn into this mystery by a call from an old friend who requests his assistance in finding his daughter who has disappeared during a ski trip to Ski Apache, Ruidoso, New Mexico. While the local authorities believe her disappearance is a result of wandering off and getting lost or voluntarily leaving the area, West quickly develops evidence that someone in Ruidoso is kidnapping and killing a young blond female each December.
As West investigates the disappearance he meets and becomes friends with a waitress who works in the café adjacent to his hotel. The relationship soon develops into a romantic one.
While the pattern is obvious to West, the motive and guilty party is not. As he strains to convince the local authorities to give the case a higher priority, he realizes that time is running out for Melissa. Knowing he can’t sit back on his heels and wait for the police to step up their own efforts, West takes matters into his own hands.Soon, West’s efforts bring him to the attention of the killer and ultimately to the final confrontation. That happens when West finds Melissa only to place the same noose around his neck that was already around hers. Time is running out for them as West knows he must find a way for them to escape or they both will become the next Cold Winter’s Kill.

Excerpt

She struggled to regain consciousness. The biting cold helped but the residual drugs in her system encouraged her to go back to that peaceful quiet sleep. She knew she was in danger and was aware that now outside, no longer a captive in that awful house, that she had to make her move to escape. Soon it could be too late.
She pushed herself to her feet, the blowing snow temporarily blinding her in the evening darkness. Suddenly, she felt his hands grab her from behind.
“No! No!” Her screams swallowed instantly by the raging wind.
She half ran and was half pushed away from the hands on her back. She had only taken four or five steps when the ground disappeared under her feet and she realized she was falling. Her body slowly turned and rolled in the air. She looked back up into the snow now falling more slowly than she was.
The impact with the ground was surprisingly not as painful as she had expected. Maybe the heavy snow cushioned the fall. She tried to move and realized her limbs wouldn’t respond. Perhaps she just needed a few minutes rest. Amazed at how peaceful she now felt, she stared up at the falling snow. The blowing wind did not reach down here. Even in the darkness the snow was beautiful and her mind drifted to thoughts of her family, her sisters. Death came before the snow had fully covered her.
