Eric slammed the screen door and jumped down the steps. He climbed into the tire swing. A funny feeling came over him. A mosquito landed on his leg. He reached down and swatted it. A fuzzy striped caterpillar crawled out of the grass and up the tree trunk. Eric watched it hump up, stretch out and hump up again. "Hey, caterpillar, what are you doing?" asked Eric. The caterpillar stopped and turned, as if to look at the dark-eyed boy. A shiver went through Eric. To order an autographed copy, contact the author through this site. Head Start Kids Enjoy Book
From: Miss Theresea, Lincoln Center Head Start, Full Day Class, Cambria County Head Start, Johnstown, PA.
I have a Head Start Class, and for Earth Day, 2004, I thought I would give Eric and the Enchanted Leaf a shot. They sat and listened very well to the whole story. (Originally I had thought I might have to read it in sections.) We vote on lots of things in our classroom so we took a poll. Of 17 children present that day, 6 liked the spider, 4 liked the ants, 8 liked the ants' house, 16 liked the fairy, 16 liked Eric. The child who didn't like Eric was upset that he became very small and nearly got stepped on. After we read the story, we went out to our playground and found an ant hill and watched for a while. They really enjoyed the story and drawings. It worked very well for us as part of our Earth Day Activities. Thanks so much for a great story.
