Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes blog

The lives of 13-year-old Shelby and his twin sister Shauna change drastically when they are recruited to go to a parallel dimension on a dangerous mission.

Who would want to have tea with mushrooms, when it's a hundred degrees and humid out? As Shelby and Shauna Kitt find out, quite a few people. These are, of course, people from Miriax, a planet in a different dimension where nothing and no one is anything like what the thirteen year-old brother and sister twins expect. On Miriax, lilac tea is served with explosive mushrooms, agitex leaves cure motion sickness, stick insects patrol the jungle, and library books carefully choose their readers, refusing to leave the shelf for anyone else. And, if you're not careful, the walls spit on you.

Shelby and Shauna's lives change drastically when planet Miriax recruits them to seal a dimensional hole that allows Klodians - nasty aliens - to travel to Earth. In order to succeed in their mission, Shelby and Shauna discover skills they never thought they possessed, make friends they never expected to have, and face enemies they never imagined existed.

SHELBY and SHAUNA KITT and the
DIMENSIONAL HOLES

This story takes you on a journey. It is the story of brother and sister twins who have more than the “twin connection” that is so often written about. This is a story about finding and relying on the goodness in people and recognizing that this goodness must sometimes be exploited for the betterment of all mankind. Make no mistake in understanding that this is a science fiction novel. It requires the reader to develop and recognize a bit of new vocabulary, but with great reward. This book is a terrific read for teens and can be a challenging quest for the pre-teen reader. As a fan of science fiction and stories that inter-relate real life experiences into future events, I loved the premise, story and character development.

We get to know our young stars of the story as the author describes many of the struggles that an outsider(s) can experience at the hands of a bullying experience. (think Junior High School in Chicago!) We see that as singular individuals the twins struggle to intermingle but as a team they not only survive but, excel. Shauna and Shelby are thirteen-year-old twins. They are equally intelligent kids whom possess great creativity and uncommon cooperation in solving problems. In-fact, they hold such positive energy and presence that they are recognized amongst a sea of billions of people to help with the coming demise of our planet.

While the story begins in suburban Chicago, the potential cataclysmic events take place between a parallel earth known as Miriax and another planet known as Klodius. These two planets are as different as night and day in that Miriax exists based on the positive energy emitted by Earth and Klodius on the negative energy emitted by our mother Earth. A being from the planet Miriax, “Lendos”, travels to Earth and reaches out to assist in the survival of both our worlds. The goal is to fix the Dimensional Holes that allow Klodians to travel to and expedite the destruction of both earth and in turn, her sister planet Miriax.

The story intrigues as the children are recruited by both the President and Lendos, of Miriax. As they mature and take on the challenges of the conflicting worlds, we find that their ability to learn, heal and teach exudes a confidence not expected from persons of their age and relative experience. As the complexities of the story gravitate to new worlds, amazing creatures and the fauna of imagined places, the characters gain depth and the adventure soars.

There is no question the author of this book, P.H.C. Marchesi, is a scholar who is very well read. The grammar is flawless and the book well written in sequence. The novel flows with a dimension of expanse into the possibility of greater events and a desire to follow the characters into adulthood. The author is working on her sequel, which will delight her readers. I found this to be a spectacularly suspenseful and overall great book for anyone who enjoys science fiction or a fun read to inspire the imagination and show the empowerment of adventurous adolescents.

Starships and Aliens
Concept/World

This is a brilliantly original idea, created in vivid detail. The two worlds the author has created alongside Earth are enthralling. I was reminded of Arthur C Clarke’s “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”, as there are many aspects to the settings and creatures that seem almost more magical than sci fi.

Story

The story powers along right from the start. It has the same kind of pace and structure as the Harry Potter stories, with apparently ordinary kids discovering extraordinary abilities, getting into trouble with the nasty authority-figure at a training camp and winning through in a high-action adventure against an overwhelming evil. I loved all that and would certainly put this book on my shelves alongside J K Rowling’s.

Characters

The characters are superbly drawn. Though the book is written for teenagers, there are adult characters for older readers to engage with. I particularly liked Marina Gibbs, a lady who takes the appearance of an alien in her stride, and does not take any cack from the army, either. Lendox, the mirian vice-consul, is amusing, and the two kids are likeable. The most intriguing character in the book, though, is the mysterious Dale Falconbridge. The author keeps you guessing right to the end whether he’s evil or not.

Presentation

I liked the cover of this book, though the title is quite a mouthful when someone asks what you’re reading! Spelling, grammar and formatting are to a professional standard.

Overall

I gulped this book down in one sitting. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to Marina and what was really going on with Dale Falconbridge. I’ll be keeping this book on my kindle to read again, and hope that Shelby and Shauna Kitt will be going on many further adventures. Highly recommended.

The Book Addict
In A Nutshell:
I do not read a large amount of science fiction, but Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes may change that for me. The characters are realistic and engaging. The setting is magical--I want to take a trip to Miriax. The story drew me in and kept me guessing until the last page. I hope there is more to come for Shelby, Shauna, Jit, Vanessa, Marian and Lendox because I very much want to see them all again.

Review:
Earth is in trouble. Aliens from a planet in a parallel dimension, Klodius, have figured out how to make dimensional holes and are traveling uninhibited to Earth. These aliens field off of the negative energy caused when humans act out of hatred, greed, or anger. They want to see the Earth overrun by negativity.

However, in this parallel dimension there is another planet, Miriax, that feeds on the positive energy from Earth. The energy that comes from our ability to dream, hope, and love. This planet's consul and vice consul reach out to Earth with a plan to close the dimensional holes and save both Earth and their own planet, Miriax. The plan includes having the humans with the highest levels of positive energy trained to protect Earth and destroy the dimensional holes. Shelby and Shauna Kitt may only be thirteen-years-old, but they represent the highest level of positive energy on Earth and the best chance that this plan will work.

P.H.C. Marchesi created characters who were balanced and authentic. It was easy to see them as normal thirteen-year-olds. They represent the highest level of positive energy, but they still get hurt feelings, lash out in anger, and have to learn the importance of saying "I'm sorry." They still have a lot to learn about themselves and the worlds around them.

Miriax is magical. It has an unusual combination of interesting technology, very formal rules of social engagement, and a love and appreciation for nature. The humans who visited Miriax in preparation for the mission all learned more about themselves, their strengths and their weaknesses as they learn to navigate this new place. By placing her characters on this new planet with its own complex culture, P.H.C. Marchesi was able to explore aspects of her characters that would have been difficult in other settings.

P.H.C. Marchesi created a story that had intrigue. For some characters, it was pretty clear whose side they were on, but there were many characters whose alliances were question marks up until the end. And the final few pages dropped a bomb shell I did not expect at all.

The Pen & Muse Book Reviews
Marchesi gives us a different kind of young adult book with Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes. This story follows an adventure of Shelby and his sister Shauna, who have special gifts and have decided to save the world and combat the darkness. Their journey is fun and funny as we learn of Miriax, another world that survives on the positive energy produced from Earthlings, and Klodius, a planet that feeds on negative energy. In a world where magic rules the pages, Marchesi combines magical genius and some science and take us on a ride with these young characters. Young adults and adults will love the story alike. A great read to devour this summer.
