There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home,” said Dorothy as she clicked the heels of her magic shoes together for the third time. And as fast as she had come to Oz, she was gone. The Scarecrow stood on the palace stage with his good friends, the Tin Woodman and Lion, and wondered if they’d ever see Dorothy again. The entire city and most of the inhabitants of Oz had come to see this young powerful girl from Kansas off and as they looked up into the sky, some cheered and some cried. The Scarecrow, who would now take over as Emperor of Oz, did not look into the sky and instead stood with his head bowed down, saddened by the events of the day and hoping for the future. He hoped that he would be as wise a ruler as the Wizard had been or as brave, heroic and kind a person as Dorothy had been. As he looked down he noticed a small ruby glistening in what was left of the Oz sunset. He bent down and picked it up.
“This must have fallen off Dorothy’s magic shoes when she clicked her heels together. It will sure make a nice memento of the day,” he thought to himself as he slid the ruby into his pocket.
“I’ll miss her!” The Tin Woodman leaned over and said as a tear streamed down his metal cheek.
