Hired to update the image of a Sutherland-owned golf club at the edge of New Jersey's Pine Barrens, Felicia Redding hides her vulnerability under an "I dare you to touch" attitude. Her recommendations to the board spark more than controversy - they begin a trail of devastation that will end only with her death.
When Slade Sutherland found his wife in another man's arms while their infant son was dying, he fled the country to nurse his grief. His father's heart attack brings him back - into a maelstrom of greed, deception, and high-stakes intrigue. And butting heads with the sexy blonde consultant he can't get out of his mind.
He thinks she's a gold-digger. She thinks he's a Neanderthal. When circumstances force them to work together, they discover a mutual need too fierce to be denied. But will their love be enough to keep a killer from striking again?
Excerpt
"You goaded him, didn't you," he spat out. "You made him ride too hard. Probably challenged him to beat you, a challenge you knew he couldn't resist." He streaked a hand across his face impatiently. It came away wet. "You killed him."
"You're wrong," she said, her voice ragged. She reached out to him again. "Neither of us knew--"
He jumped to his feet and loomed over her. "You think because you're handicapped that I'll overlook it? Damn you to hell. If there is such a thing as a hell." He didn't think so. He'd already had a hell on earth when his son died, and having his father die like this proved his premise. Hell was right here, right now. Hell was a woman who made him start to feel again, who made him turn his head when he should have been watching out for his father.
