"The stories are timely, but not timeless, and close to universal experiences, out-doing many tired elements around today" (Richard Armour)
The Funny Side Up ran as a weekly column in a dozen newspapers and half dozen digest magazines since 1979, long before the title was "borrowed" by others, but the contents are uniquely hilarious. Readers say they could not put it down, and read it in one sitting. Guaranteed a laugh per line, at half the price of a movie ticket.I
Excerpt
I told the Vet all I knew about our cat Gracie, which took all of 12 seconds. He poked the cat here and there, as I had done. He lifted her up, looked in her eyes, and put her down, just as I had done. He lifted her tail and peeked in...he had me there! Patting Gracie on her head, he asked: "First Cat?" No I replied, one other. "First female cat?" he repeated. "Yes!" I replied. "It figures!" I asked if it was as serious as my wife insisted. "Not very..." he said, "she's in heat!" "Oh!" I said, feeling like an idiot. No wonder the cat purred when I rubbed her belly. I turned to my wife Anne and reminded her about her remark that the cat might die, and that no animal or human had ever died from those symptoms. With ten kids of her own, she was living proof. "You should have her fixed!" butted in the vet. "I beg your pardon? Anne snapped. " I mean the cat!" the vet quickly replied.

| "Funny Side Up" has lived in the Leech household since my wife's dad (Wiley) became ill and eventually died of the same disease Al Squitieri survived (Polymyositis). Al tells all in his book "Broken Glass and All." My wife's mom now lives in a small cottage adjacent to our home, and whenever any of us get sad thinking about Wiley, we can read a chapter or two of "Funny Side Up" and the tears of sadness are transformed into to tears of laughter. Thanks Al for helping us cope. Mike |

Bob Tubaugh, an avid reader, July 3, 2001,
Guaranteed more laughs than pages!
I finished reading and laughing thru this book, 'Funny Side Up.' I'll be recommending it to others. Al did an excellent job of entertaining with his humorous stories. And as I recall, he did an excellent job of preaching too. Now I'm going to read his other book, 'Broken Glass And All.' I expect it to be more informative than humorous, though, I can't picture Al not including some humor in all his writing. Bob Tubaugh, Palm Harbor, Florida.
