In the 1950’s newlyweds, Louise and Dennis Clark, a young African American couple chooses to leave their boring farmland home to escape being consumed in a small town life. They travel to Los Angeles where they hope to find prosperity. The couple moves into a coach house in Los Angeles, where they discover a hidden treasure in a long forgotten cellar. Two white conmen arrive on the scene after following a trail of rumors which has led them to this secreted treasure. Louise, the heroine is suspicious of the men and tries to convince her husband that they are up to no good. Dennis refuses to agree with her. Louise snoops around in the men’s apartment, finds out that they are ex-convicts and finds evidence linking them to the hidden treasure. She can’t tell her husband what she discovers because he would be furious with her. Excerpt

Walking over to inspect his closet, she found stylish suits and silk lounging robes, something like what she had seen worn by male actors who portrayed an affluent man at the picture show or males in a high fashion magazine. On the floor was a couple of pair of highly polished dress shoes. This was a mystery in itself. There was definitely more to Paul than she realized and apprehension nagged her. Who is this man and why is he traveling with Mark? Was Mark really his son? He certainly didn’t act like him nor did he resemble him. What are they up to? Were they the ordinary run-of-the mill thieves as she suspected them to be, or were they some kind of spies working undercover for the government? Don’t be foolish, she scolded. Paul is a confidence man, a lady’s man, the type of scoundrel that preyed on old ladies and other non-suspecting souls. The type of which she had no experience with, none other than what she had seen at the movies or read about in books. Somewhere, somehow, he picked up Mark along the way and they became companions.

Ker plunk! She heard from a distance. Louise jerked around, ran to the living room, and cautiously looked out of the window.
