Vrolok, the Slovakian word for Vampire may classify this book as horror fiction or paranormal but the content is historical fiction.

Vrolok takes readers on a journey into the past as we meet Isabella, the beautiful and independent woman who lives in Transylvania more than 500 years ago. Never one to obey rules, Isabella's curiosity leads her to the castle of Vlad Dracula where her life takes a dramatic turn. Vlad has led his troops in battle against the Turks and thirsts for power. Although married to Nicolae, Isabella is entranced by Vlad and is soon joined to him as she could be to no other.

This is not a blood and gore novel of vampires who stalk innocent victims under cover of night, but a literary tale of how Vlad and Isabella intermingle with some of history's most famous and notorious characters. Emotions run high in this tumultuous relationship and the two are often separated for years. Isabella has an inbred goodness that constantly arises throughout her long life, keeping her from becoming a shallow blood- thirsty monster. Over the centuries, the immortal Isabella spends time with playwright Kit (Christopher) Marlowe, the Medicis Godfather's of the Renaissance in Italy, Countess Elizabeth Bathory, Van Helsing of Holland, Wyatt Earp and many more colorful and larger than life historical figures.

VROLOK

For centuries I have walked among you;

Feeding off you, living off you;

You haven’t known I was there;

You have never known the creature that I am;

And to this day you think I do not exist.

Be warned I do exist.

I am a Vampire, a Vrolok,

A devil, and a killer.

I could be there when a storm comes from nowhere out of the sky.

I could be there when you hear a whisper in the wind;

Or see a phantom in the mist.

I could be there when your blood turns to ice and your hands start to tremble.

There is no escape from me, for…

 I am a Vampire, a Vrolok,

a devil, and a killer.

I have had three great loves in my existence on this earth.

First was a human, then a Vampire, and then a Vrolok.

Each one was different from the last;

And each one I loved with what was left of my empty heart.

I would I have died to protect them but at times the only protection they needed was from me. For

  I am a Vampire, a Vrolok,

a devil, and a killer.

I cannot be harmed by you or your kind.

Only a unique creature can harm me;

This creature is now but a child.

Until that child comes of age

I will continue to wander the earth, free to be…

a Vampire, a Vrolok,

a devil, and a killer.

So how can you distinguish me from the other people of this world?

Look for a woman with raven hair, red lips, and white skin.

She will be cold to touch

and will have a small scar above her heart, where she once came close to harm,

But, be warned… do not seek me out for

I am a Vampire, a Vrolok,

a devil, and a killer,

Will I build a nation of Vampires?

Will they be the greatest race ever to rule the earth?

Will they be like they were before thousands of years ago?

Who knows… only time will tell.

But for as long as I rule the immortals, rest easy in your beds.

For no Vampire can enter your home without an invitation.

So when a stranger insists on an invitation

 before they cross the threshold of your home,

Always be cautious …For they may be

a Vampire, a Vrolok,

a devil, and a killer.

Vrolok, published by an anonymous author 1906.

Excerpt

“THIS BATTLE HAS BUT BEGUN AND
IN THE END WE SHALL WIN”

He was watching her as he had done so many nights before; she glided down the empty street, her golden hair glimmered, even in the blackness of night. She was a vision, she looked so beautiful and pure that if he had not seen her kill he would never of believed she was capable of it. He waited for her to approach him before he showed himself. When she was just steps away from him he faced her.
“I was looking for you.” Her voice echoed like music through the air. The bewitching creature leaned into to kiss him and he appeared receptive to her embrace. His hands were at his back and he slowly brought them around, to an onlooker it seemed that he was about to hold her in his arms as she kissed him. But then his motion gained speed and he pushed her from him. He reached for his knife and slashed his own wrist. Blood seeped out onto the blade. The creature he had pushed from him ran back towards him with the intention of ending his life but he was to end hers, she ran onto his blade. She screamed out in agony and fell to the ground. She would no longer trouble this world. He walked away satisfied that he had done what he had come here to do, for he, Abraham Van Helsing, had just killed his first vampire.

Titled, Vrolok, the Slovakian word for Vampire may classify this book as horror fiction or paranormal but the content is historical fiction at its finest.

The author's research and carefully presented facts are beyond reproach. Her skill as a writer and gifted storyteller excel as readers follow Isabella on her time travel. Captivating characters plus exciting action and adventure, have readers mesmerized by this story of love and hate, jealousy and survival. Nolene-Patricia Dougan lives in Ravara, Ireland and we await more from this talented writer.
Enchanting, entertaining and educational this is one book that historical fiction fans as well as horror and paranormal followers will love. Highly recommended by Reviewer: Shirley Roe, Allbooks Reviews.

Harriet Klausner - Fantastic
Five centuries ago in Transylvania, Isabella flaunting societal rules as always, decides to visit the castle of notorious Vlad Dracula, who has gained notoriety with his war tactics against the Turkish invaders. However, she finds something more in Vlad that her own spouse Nicolae lacks. Isabella sees a need to rule the masses and offers herself to Vlad as his queen by his side. Vlad accepts the beautiful headstrong female as his, but she is stunned when he turns her into what he is, a Vrolok (vampire).------------ Over the next few centuries Vlad and Isabella share a deep abiding love, but also have deep heated fights and jealous rages. Isabella refuses to turn into a non-caring monster and has a natural passion for the life of others. Over the years they meet many humans some are friends others are enemies and a few are so diabolically devious they are both. Vlad and Isabella live the lives of immortals while those they encounter become footnotes in history.--------------- In some ways VROLOK is more a historical biographical fiction than a horror thriller as Isabella relates her escapades with several real persona like Kit Marlowe and Wyatt Earp. Her encounters with Van Helsing are some of the best vampire interludes in recent years and the Medici come across as wily, conniving charmers. Vampire fans will appreciate this different bite on the creatures of the night with a strong historical biographical perspective.---- Harriet Klausner

This girl is one of the best female writers to come out of Ireland. And a writer to watch out for in the future. Three cheers for Vrolok.
