Presented skillfully are six short stories featuring unique challenges of older people and the solutions for which they struggle
Rebecca must consider divorce from her husband, but she is well into the Third Age and has nowhere to go. Caroline thinks she cannot survive without a special recipe from her gourmet neighbor who dies suddenly. Two sisters are confronted with a medical problem of one of them desperately needing the help of the other. But many years ago there was an unresolved conflict about a husband. This blocks communication making a solution extremely difficult. Troop Train is a treasure of memories from World War II days and how a soldier finds a girl who makes him want to live and win. The last days of a farmer and his wife are saddened by the death of a beloved grandsom whose memory they want to honor. A dog named Duke eases the pain for Marie and her lifetime of guilt.
Excerpt
There is no better definitiion of serenity than life in the Third Age. For some there may be bitter moments of regret or unyielding disappointment, but sittin' and thinkin' for many hours a day soothes them away. For others the memories of special days past make growing old worthwhile. You can see in the foregoing tales that special days are not the obvious: meeting that somebody who changes the rest of your life forever, becoming engaged/married, giving birth to a child, times when something special occurs for that child. Indeed much more special and significant are those days when a longstanding burden is suddenly lifted. Something out of your life's distant past need no longer impede. It is gone and you come alive. Or it may be when a haunting mystery is unexpectedly solved opening up a whole new universe. Most rewarding of all is that extraordinary moment when someone reveals to you that you did something right, something wonderful that no on ever mentioned to you before, something that fulfills and warms you like the summer's all-consuming sun rays from heaven.

Short stories from Mid America
In her book The Third Age Cometh Dorothea Fuller Smith has written a collection of short stories of forgiveness and hope. These are stories of crisis and conflict. The
author has given us stories of citizens in a new stage of life, the third age.
Her characters are believable and often evoke feelings of tenderness as stubborn, inflexible personalities soften and become pliable, as their fears and dread are resolved. Each story deals with a bothersome haunting question. The surprise solution provides a good and satisfying sense of closure to the participants in the story and the reader as well.
I recomment this book for readers of every generation, but especially to those members eager to enjoy their entry into The Third Age.--Richard R. Blake
