Excerpt
ECHOES OF THE FLESH
Do you hear that sound
the clicking in your entrails
like the distant rumble of war?
Picture the battles being waged
inside your body
the blood cells colliding
in the midst of a snow storm
Is it Napoleon’s troops
falling like pegs
at the gates of Moscow
or the last German battalions
being decimated
in the deadliest of
a Russian winter?
The echo grows louder
until it fills every inch
of your bones
You try to move a leg
a gesture repeated
a million times by rote
but suddenly your limbs
refuse to obey
history has a way
of taking its revenge
some call it karma

Praise from poets and writers
Dear Albert Russo:
l've read everything you sent me, and I like your work very much indeed. It has a very gentle surface and a savage under-tow and I applaud the wicked portrait of Ionesco.
All the best, JAMES BALDWIN
DOUGLAS PARMEE, Poet and translator (Queens' College, University of Cambridge, UK):
“... l was particularly impressed by the remarkable range shown in such a small space, and the extraordinary command of the language. Albert Russo will one day produce an important body of work."
PIERRE EMMANUEL , Poet (Académie Française):
“... l want to tell you the pleasure l had upon reading those difficult, sensuous pages ... yet full of humor.”
PAUL WILLEMS, Curator of the Brussels Museum of Fine Arts and Author: "From the onset l felt a new tone in Albert Russo's work, to which one cannot remain indifferent.”
