Excerpt
They ran all the way to Zoey’s house and hid in her bedroom for about an hour. Together, they came up with the craziest theories about Mr. Manicotti.
“What if he comes and finds us? He’s going to turn us into one of those white figurines, isn’t he? I don’t want to be a gnome,” Scottie whimpered.
“I don’t know. He might. I don’t think he knows where I live … but he does know where my parents work,” Zoey said with wide-eyed anxiety.
“Oh, Zoey! I wish we never had gone over there!” Scottie whined in despair.
“But it was the right thing to do… I don’t think we offended him. It wasn’t like we rang the doorbell and ran, right?” she asked thinking aloud.
“True. But now he’s seen our faces!” Scottie said fearfully.
