Nickie's Nook: Sharing the Journey
A Beginning Word or More…
This book is born of my blog, Nickie’s Nook, and
some of the best entries I’ve written there. I want to first
thank you for picking up this book. Whatever reasons
caused you to read these words, I hope it exceeds your
expectations.
I wrote this book because I hope that my journey
can help others know they are not alone. I hope that my
ideas can help you find peace and hope.
Who is Nickie? I’m a college student, attending a
private college in the Midwest United States. I am blind,
though I can see light and bright colors. I travel with a
wonderful Guide Dog named Julio. I suffer from Complex
Regional Pain Syndrome, a condition characterized by
extreme burning pain. I am a social work major who
hopes to work with people who suffer from pain. Finally, I
am a Christian.
As you can see, there are many facets of my
identity. You will notice this throughout this book, as I

write about my life and multiple strands of who I am
shine through.

Know your resources: Build a tool box
One of the concepts that could have helped me
the most if I'd been less hardheaded is having a toolbox.
There are several people who have suggested this to
me, some who are good friends, others whom I don't
know but who know a lot about pain management.
