When Stella and her young son are abandoned by her husband she is at the mercy of an unscrupulous neighbour who lusts after her.

Stella believes she is saved when her husband returns, but she is devastated to learn that her husband has no intention of remaining with her. He is leaving for Australia to start a new life. A life Stella can have no part of for he no longer loves her.
Yet Stella's husband has a desperate favour to ask of her, and giving her no choice he leaves her with an added burden though her husband knows that Stella is already challenged by poverty.

He also leaves a terrible secret.
