(Excerpt from Chapter 5)
Fasting helps us to meditate on the things of the Spirit. Those who can hear clearly in the Spirit, knows that it is not enough to pray. Praying is speaking to the Lord, and mediation is waiting to hear a response. What is the first thing after we have eaten a meal do we want to do? That’s right, relax. We don’t feel like worshipping or praying. We need food to nourish the flesh, but food is an enemy to the Spirit Man. I believe that God created sleep to give our bodies that quiet time that it needs. When we are asleep, we are allowing the body and mind to rest so that we can hear in the spirit. Don’t be deceived; just like God’s Spirit minister’s to you while you are still, so does the evil one’s spirit. You must stay in the Word to develop the ability to differentiate between the voice of the Holy Spirit and the voice of the enemy. When you sleep, not only does your body replenish itself; you are also fasting your flesh. Let’s face it; you don’t eat in your sleep do you? After you have slept through the night, or went through a period of not eating; the first meal you eat is called a “breakfast”. Over 500 years ago, people started calling the first meal of the day “breakfast” because you are literally breaking the fast
