Excerpt
It all began with a small digital clock I had in my car. The adhesive had worn off the back and it had fallen off the dash, so I put it in the ashtray. Keep in mind I never used the ashtray for anything other than storage for the clock.
Ray and I got into my car one night, when he pointed out that the clock was no longer in the ashtray, and he wanted to know where it went. I thoroughly looked for it, but had no answer as to where it had gone. I knew I hadn’t taken it out, but didn’t really think much of it. A week or so later, we were back in my car. Ray purposefully opened the ashtray to see what was inside. There was the clock. I knew that I hadn’t taken it out, and I definitely hadn’t put it back after it was missing. Ray questioned me repeatedly as to the disappearance and the reappearance of the clock; questioning that soon turned into accusations. Accusations that I had another guy in my car, and that I must be “cheating”. No matter what I said, he would twist my words prolonging the interrogation.
And so it began…

Writer's Digest 15th Annual Book Awards - Life Stories
Excellent writing! It’s difficult to keep a publishable yet conversational tone, but this book does it. Right from the beginning, I was drawn not only by the story, but by the honesty of all the elements. The honesty was there without romanticizing, glossing, attacking or being bitter or self-aggrandizing. Rather, even though readers might not have had the same experience as the author, just reading about this author is cathartic; she is relatable. The reader gets the feeling she can find the answer in the book or at least achieve a more rational state of mind. I also like that the treatments of Christianity did not go beyond what it was in emphasis or attitude. Handled nicely, the scriptures were always apt.
Writer's Digest 15th Annual Book Awards - Inspirational
This is a success story of real courage. This young author was not only able to recognize the extensive problems she had and even brought on herself, but through real soul searching later, she was able to take responsibility for her dysfunctional or neurotic behavior and find answers through the church, which in turn allowed, encouraged her to change. Equally commendable, Ms. Tremaine has written in detail about her past horrors and her road to salvation. She has obviously found comfort in writing.
The author’s voice is constant and believable and her recall of past events in such detail is surprising. It’s not only her new found faith that has directed her, but saved her. Her writing has no doubt been a savior of sorts, and a cathartic process, directing her to find reason in her life – and God. The reader is curious to read about Ms. Tremaine’s life and find out how she is able to keep on. A memoir of real interest – and redemption.
Writer's Digest 15th Annual Book Awards - Nonfiction
In her book This Side Of Heaven, author L. Tremaine presents a very well-written story about her journey of faith. Since she's had such an intriguing life, this book is a fascinating read. I especially enjoyed the personal journal entries Tremaine includes toward the end of the book, since they provide a clear and personal view of the ongoing life events. Tremaine also adds interspersed Bible quotes at the start of select chapters and sometimes within the main text that coordinate with the actions she discusses in that section. Often, she’ll include her personal commentary alongside the Bible quotes, which is a wonderful addition to the book. Finally, her use of conversational language easily draws readers into the book, where they will find themselves rooting for Tremaine as her life takes dramatic twists and turns.
