New Movie Books

Everyone loves lists of best movies. Ub addition to over 90 full reviews, this book not only lists what I consider the best 400 films ever made, but examines my selection in the light of other books on the subject, particularly "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die".

This book is more than just a list of great movies. In addition to my listing of the best 400, a number of those pictures are examined in detail: "The Third Man" for example, and "The Shepherd of the Hills". "The General", "Gilda", "Tales of Manhattan", "The Big Clock",  "Anna Karenina", "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", "China Seas", "Duck Soup", the entire "Thin Man" series, "The Citadel", "Cat People", "Cardinal Richelieu", "Are Parents People?", "I Found Stella Parrish", "Hips, Hips, Hooray", "I Remember Mama", "Three Godfathers". "Special Agent", "Spite Marriage", "The 13th Guest", "I Walk Alone", "Love on the Run", "Oil for the Lamps of China", "Odor in the Court", "Tower of London", "The Uninvited", "Another Fine Mess", "Hold That Co-Ed", "The Old Dark House", "Our Hospitality", "The Last of Mrs Cheyney", "Paris Interlude", "Parachute Jumper", "The Purchase Price", "The Trouble with Harry", "Lisbon", and "Rose of Washington Square".

There are of course lots more in the book itself. But not all old movies are golden oldies. You'll find one or two clunkers sprinkled through the above list and I examine many more in the book itself: films like "Two Guys from Milwaukee", "British Intelligence", and "Thunder over Texas", my nominee for worst western "B" movie of all time.

Professional Reviews
Ross Adams in "Dress Circle" magazine:
The following review by editor, Ross Adams, appeared in the Christmas 2010 issue of "DRESS CIRCLE: Movie Enthusiasts & Collectors Magazine": In "New Light on Movie Bests", John Howard Reid criticizes the lack of balance in other "Best Films" lists which tend to be biased in favor of the latest releases. For comparison, he provides his own list of 400 "essential movies". JHR then reviews 93 films in detail (including full credits and release information). Not everyone will agree with his selection, but if we all agreed with John Howard Reid, we'd have nothing to argue about. So what are his selections warranting detailed coverage in "New Light on Movie Bests"? There are classics that few will argue with, such as "Anna Karenina" (1935), "China Seas" (1935), "Duck Soup" (1933), "Gilda" (1946), "The General" (1926), and "The Third Man" (1949). And then there are the surprises like "The Bat Whispers" (1930) with Chester Morris, and "Bride of the Gorilla" (1951) with Barbara Payton. Apart from some of these lesser films, John looks at movies featuring famous stars – those of a previous era when actors could act and when films had story lines. Apart from giving a synopsis for each movie, a full cast list and all the technical staff, John provides many background details. All this information is provided in addition to his comments, which are sometimes very cutting but always candidly honest.
