The next 42 pages are taken up with an examination of all 66 of William Boyd's "Hopalong Cassidy" movies, The author then homes in on the Top Five Western Stars, whom he regards as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Alan Ladd, and Buck Jones. Reid concludes this survey with an article entitled, "The World's Worst Westerns" -- by which he means, of course, the worst western movies that are available on DVD. Needless to say, complete DVD details (including the quality or lack of quality of the DVD itself) are provided for all the hundreds of western titles discussed. The attractive cover features a color photo of John Wayne, while the back cover features Alan Ladd in "Whispering Smith". This edition differs slightly from JHR's previous books. He reviews 96 films with full credits and release details, and then has chapters covering Hopalong Cassidy's 66 movies, plus the films of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne. Alan Ladd and Buck Jones. The final chapter lists the ten films JHR regards as the world's worst westerns. Many interesting tid bits emerge in this volume. Did you know that Roddy McDowall once starred in a western? Or that the screenwriter for James Stewart's famous "Broken Arrow" didn't actually write the script even though he was nominated for that year's Academy Award? Or that some of the first-release Hopalong Cassidy pictures made by Paramount were purchased and released by United Artists instead? And here's yet another surprise -- Donald O'Connor once starred in a western! Yes, all told this is an interesting and highly informative volume which should be on the library shelves of every Western fan!
