Excerpt

Chapter #7
The Leaky Cave
Hobee said, “We have to find where the water is coming from first. Then maybe we can fix the problem for the bats.”
Bobit replied, “Who’s going to follow the river of water deeper into the cave.”
Hobee said, “Well, I guess I’ll have to do it, since I’m half duck and there might be some water involved.”
Tulip asked, “What should Bobit and I do while you’re up the river doing that?”
Bobit replied, “That’s funny, Tulip.”
Hobee said, “Now you two could go look outside and see if you can see where the water is coming from.”
Bobit and Tulip replied, “Okay.”
Bobit and Tulip ventured outside while Hobee looked inside the cave for where the water might be coming from.
Hobee asked the old bat, “What should I call you?”
“My name is Thiess. I’m the leader of the fruit bats.”
Hobee replied, “Nice to meet you, Mr. Thiess.” Hobee asked, “Where is the end of the cave, or where do you think the water is coming into the cave?”
Mr. Thiess replied, “I think it’s coming in almost at the end of the cave, I’ll show you, follow me. This way.”
As Mr. Thiess flew deeper down into the cave, Hobee tried to keep up as best as he could. Hobee said several times, “Wait up for me.” Then Hobee hollered, “I can’t see in the dark and the floor is really bumpy and rocky.”
Mr. Thiess replied, “It’s just up here a little further.”
Hobee arrived minutes after Mr. Thiess.
Mr. Thiess, in an excited voice, pointing to where the water was flowing in, said, “Here it is, right here.”
Hobee said, “It’s coming in from the ceiling I think.”
Mr. Thiess, with a nod, repeated, “Yip, she’s coming in from the ceiling all right.”
Hobee, with a puzzled look, said, “There’s got to be some kind of water above the cave.”
Mr. Thiess replied, “Well, I’ll let you young day-people deal with this, and I will see you in the evening.”
Meanwhile, outside the cave, Tulip and Bobit were looking for where the water might be coming in. Tulip said, “I don’t see any water.”
Bobit replied, “Wait, I think I smell moisture in the air.”
Tulip asked, “Is it the water?”
Bobit, in an excited voice, answered, “It might be.”
Then Bobit replied, “This way, I think it is this way.”
Tulip asked, “Are you sure?”
Bobit said, “I think I can smell the water. It’s over here. Oh no, it’s only a beaver dam. I think we struck out.”
Tulip replied, “That is too bad.”
Bobit, in a disappointed voice, said, “Let’s go back to the cave and tell Hobee that we couldn’t find anything out here but a beaver’s dam.”
Once back at the cave, Bobit and Tulip told Hobee that the only thing they found was a beaver pond and dam. Hobee thought for a minute.
Hobee asked, “Where was the beaver pond at?”
Bobit replied, “It was on the backside of the mountain. I think.”
Hobee said, “That could be where the water is coming from since the leak is in the ceiling. The beaver pond should be the first thing we should check out to see if that is where the water is coming from.”
Tulip, in a moaning voice, replied, “My feet are sore and tired.”
Hobee said, “It’s going to take all of us to find the leak in the cave.”
Tulip, in a grumpy voice, replied, “All right, give me a minute and I’ll be ready.”
Hobee asked, “Bobit, did you see anything else that could help us?”
Bobit replied, “Just that the beaver pond is almost behind the cave on the other side of this hill, or it sure seemed like it to me.”
Tulip, in a loud voice, said, “Me too.”
Hobee said, “Then that will be the first place we will check out.”
Mr. Thiess replied, “I will send a couple of bats with you just in case you need some help.”
