Marissa paced the room. The covers were pulled back ready for her to climb in.
She knew what would happen if she went to sleep. Every night was the same -- always the same.
She would be walking along the footpath with Jeremy; they’d be holding hands. They’d stop -- he’d kiss her -- she’d wrap her arms around his neck. His hands would slide down to her waist, then he’d lift one hand to her face, brush a wisp of hair back into place.
She would whisper “I love you,” and he’d whisper “Ditto.” They’d look into each other’s eyes then walk hand in hand to the pedestrian crossing.
No cars in sight -- they’d step out onto the road, take a few steps. She’d feel Jeremy’s grasp tighten. She’d hear the thud; feel the thud. Stars would float around her. She’d hear the roar of an engine, the squeal of brakes, Jeremy’s scream. She’d sink into a deep black void.
Marissa shivered. Her stomach churning with an overwhelming emptiness, she walked out into the lounge room.
She turned on the television and prepared for another long night.
