This is an historical fiction novel re-telling the story of the bible from the point of view of Lilith--God's wife, who as bewitched by Lucifer in heaven, conceived a child and both were exiled to Earth by God as a result.
All of the back-stories of the bible are told and all of the major events in the old and new testaments are revealed and the secrets behind those events.

This is a work that looks at many of the ideas in the bible and seeks to  give them a new look. What are notions of good and evil in the bible and what is their genesis? Was Lilith Adam's first wife? What really happened with Cain and Abel? Why the Flood? Did Abraham give us the fathers of both Judaism and Islam? Why did Jesus come to earth? Was Jesus an Essene? Did he have a family; brothers and sisters?

What happened to Jesus' family after the cruxification?

The bible is the vehicle in which the most salient issues in western civilization are spoken to and "Lilith" takes these issues on head first. Lilith is our guide to our own mythic origins, to our own notions of what is bad and what is good, and why.

The author looks at the bible as a mythic document which seeks to answer profound questions of the origins of human nature; the reasons why there is good and evil and, throws up for our inspection, beings we call God, Lucifer and now, Lilith.

The answers we find implicit and explicit in the bible will astound us and perhaps have us read the bible as a document with new eyes.

Professional Reviews

This review is from: The Gospel According to Lilith (Volume 1) (Paperback)
As I get older I'm enjoying the readings of religion and the various stories being told by all authors. Probably because I like to see how they will present their side of the story. Whether it has to do with an angel, good and evil, Satan and God there is always a battle. Isn't this why we believe and question our religion and faith so much? The character Lilith is the same, his is a story told from her point of view and you get wrap into the events. The scriptures and versus of the bible all have meaning and as they are tied into the story you remind yourself to be open so you can see it honestly from someone else's point of view. This book titled "The Gospel According to Lilith" by author Lonnie Hicks catches you from the beginning and for that I applaud the author.

Of course it`s historic, it's religion the oldest story and test of time for everyone. Who wouldn't love the chance or opportunity to sit with God and say "So what really happened that night?" As we all grow older believing in our faiths we know he'll tell us when we get there. For now we're in our temporary homes and reading the various authors as they tell the story and challenge our thoughts and beliefs. This was a good read.

Historical fiction at its best., February 26, 2010

"The Gospel According to Lilith" by Lonnie Hicks, is a book that challenges what you have been told about good and evil. In this book, major events from the Bible are explained from the point of view of Lilith. Lilith was the most enchanting arch-angel who was exiled along with Lucifer by God. Some of the events included are the creation of Adam and Eve as well as why Jesus was crucified.

I am not usually big on books dealing with religion, but this one was very different. The book is written from the point of view of Lilith, and she is telling the "truth" behind the stories we have all been taught over the years. This is one historical fiction that I am glad to have read.

Although I am not, traditionally, a huge fan of historical fiction, I have to say that the premise of The Gospel According to Lilith had a premise that completely grabbed me! I had to read it.

I have always been fascinated with the Bible and how earth/man came to be. Everytime I read a story about God and what happened during those times,my imagination always starts going wild with questions and what ifs? I have always wondered just how much of what we now believe to be the events of that time have actually been distorted and revisionned over the course of our history.

The Gospel According to Lilith challenges does exactly that - it challenges the beliefs that we have been "told" since the beginning of time. What if good and evil really was about God and those he holds dear betraying him - forcing him to choose sides and setting up the ultimate war for all times?

I loved this book. Written in a down to earth yet beatiful way, the author tells his story with conviction and weaves a story that is completely believeable and very, very scary. I found myself being completely caught up with the storyline and I found myself constantly thinking "yeah, that could have happened".

Truly enjoyed reading this one.
