Mother Teresa, Called to Love is an easy to read biography of a modern day saint who proved that one person with enough love, compassion, courage and persistence can change the world. Because she fell in love with God with an intensity rare in the greatest of saints and because she saw Him in everyone she met she showed us unconditional love.
The book opens with WHAT MOTHER TERESA TAUGHT ME ABOUT LOVE, Here the author describes her relationship with Mother and her work. The rest of the book is a down to earth, fast reading narrative of Mother Teresa's life and work from her birth in war torn Skopje to her joining the Sisters of Loretto at 18, hearing God's call to go into the gutters and help the poorest of the poor, winning the Nobel Peace Prize and opening homes for abandoned children, lepers, the dying all over the world.
Excerpt
One day when Mother Teresa came to visit Shanti Nagar, Sister Frances Xavier asked, "May I speak with you alone, Mother?"
"Of course, Sister."
" I have leprosy, Mother," Sister Francis said calmly, "There are several Sisters who have been diagnosed."
"I am sorry we did not follow Doctor Sen's rules not to touch those with contagious wounds. But when you see Jesus in HIs distressing disguise and you know He gladly died for you, how can you put worries about your own health before caring for Him?"
"I know, Sister," Mother said. "I never told any of you not to touch them. I told all of you to listen to the doctors very carefully so you will understand the situation."

easy to read
Maryanne Raphael's book about Mother Teresa is one of those books that is easy to read and sinks deep into all of us. She shares with us a very special glow, the excitement, the safety she felt in her teacher's presence.
Maryanne is a careful writer and has sought to share her feelings in this book; which is important for all of us in these times when it is hard to find solace. Through love, courage and sacrifice Mother Teresa proved that one person can change the world. She taught her Co-Workers to see the needs of the world's suffering people. ...She guided them to learn from the poor, the dying, the depressed. She would not allow anyone who wasn't smiling to work in her home for the dying. "A smile is the beginning of peace," she insisted. "The peace of the world depends upon our smiling at one another."
