Act Three
Scene One
Candy is sleeping on the sofa. Tracy and Penny are sitting next to her. Toby, Amy, and Janet enter through the front door. The telephone is on the arm of the sofa, next to Penny.
Amy
We were on our way home from the dance center. We heard about the car accident over the radio. It’s all over the news.
Toby
We were scared because the location they described was right in front of your house.
Janet
The news said that a young, teen-age, male was driving and he only received minor injuries. They couldn’t release his name, because of his age. They couldn’t release the name of the critically injured teen-age girl either until her family was notified. What happened?
Tracy
Allison left Willy in her car with the car keys; listening to the radio. Willy decided to go for a joy ride. Tammy, not knowing that Willy took off in the car, went out side to wait with him.
Tracy becomes too emotional to continue. She covers her face with both hands. Penny puts her arm around Tracy’s shoulder.
Excerpt:
Penny slowly places the phone on the receiver. Her thoughts are far away. She just sits there, not bothering to look at the other girls; who are anxiously waiting to find out about Tammy’s condition.
Amy
(speaking to Penny)
What?
Penny
(snaps out of her trance)
Oh, that was Allison.
Tracy
We know that.
Penny
There is no change. Tammy is still unconscious. She’s in surgery. Her condition is still critical but stable.
(pause)
Willy collapsed in the waiting room. He has a serious concussion and he’s very upset about the accident. The doctor is keeping him over night for observations.
Toby
I can’t believe this is happening. It’s so creepy. It’s like a bad dream.
Candy
(crying)
But it’s not a bad dream. Tammy was on the ground bleeding. I’m scared!
Tracy holds Candy in her arm and tries to comfort her. All of the girls are teary eyed. There is not a dry eye in the room. Toby takes the lead singing and all the other girls join in the chorus.
All
(singing)
Oh, Tammy
Tammy, Tammy, Tammy
Don’t leave us
Don’t leave us, please, don’t leave us
We need you
We need you, how we need you
And love you
Oh, Tammy, how we love you
Oh, Tammy, hold on; hold on to life
Please, don’t go away
Oh, Tammy, hold on, hold on to life
Please, please, try to stay
Give your mommy and daddy
Another happy day
You’ve got to be strong
You’ve got to hold on
You’ve got to keep faith
when all else has gone
Here take my hand; my strength
is your strength
Hold on to hope, for you I’ll be strong
I will be strong
Tammy, hold on, Tammy, be strong
I pray for you now, tonight, tomorrow
You’ve got to be strong
You’ve got to hold on
Please, lean on me
Excerpt:
Willy, I don’t think dad wanted you to say as much as you just did.
Willy
I know, but, I’m glad dad got them to take the check. It won’t help Tammy walk again, but it makes me feel better knowing that we can help; and Tammy would be taken care of for the rest of her life.
(pause)
I feel so terrible about what I did to her. The judge only gave me probation and community services. Tammy gets to pay for the rest of her life.
Allison
We know you feel terrible about what happened, Willy, but it was an accident. You have been paying for that accident every day since it happened. Little brother, it’s time you stop beating yourself up.
Candy
Allison, are you and Willy still seeing that shrink?
Penny
Candy, that is not a nice way to put it; it’s called a psychiatrist.
Candy
Well, if he gets inside your head and shrinks out all the bad stuff, he’s a shrink.
Penny
What?
Candy
The shrink. He gets inside your head and shrinks out all the bad stuff. Then, he pushes it in this tiny little room in your brain and locks it there so it can’t get out. That’s why he’s called a shrink.
