John and Mike sauntered across John’s pristine freshly cut lawn, listening to the crunch of the gravel pathway with each step of their new Nike running shoes. Raising their eyes simultaneously, they both stopped to admire a new addition to the Matsumoto's family lawn. There before them was a detailed merman fountain, carefully carved from head to tail. Compared to the old, dilapidated dolphin fountain that was present just a few days earlier; this left the boys dumbfounded. The merman’s firm biceps and distinguished jaw created a sense of power and accomplishment that the Matsumoto family was eager to display.
Although Mike was simply walking across the lawn of his closest friend’s house, he felt ashamed of the grandeur of the property. It reminded him of his own mansion, a gaping atrocity on the cliffs of Palos Verdes. Mike’s mansion was easily the newest, most stylish house in PV. Everyone at their high school was envious of his house, except Mike. He loathed his house and rarely gave out his address; not that it would matter. His family made it known that the house belonged to the Vander Ark family. Mike envied families that lived in average sized houses, who ate dinner around a small wooden table every night sharing their adventures of the day. His family rarely saw each other more than once throughout the week. He knew more about his family from books and online than from actual conversation. The only exception was his sister. Their rooms sat across the hall from each other. Mike had suffered from agoraphobia and his sister pitied him. Mike and his sister spent many nights together in the hallway talking until the break of dawn. However, as the years progressed, these nights became less frequent and the reminder of John’s wealth indirectly reminded Mike of the distance that had grown between the two...
