A country beauty's impetuous nature plunges her into a London Season of love and danger.
For her insulting behavior toward the Earl of Ashcom, on whom her family depends for subsistence, beautiful Fantine Delmere earns for herself an unwanted London Season and is forced to leave her beloved Evergreen and venture into the hard glare of the heartless high society she abhors. But Fantine's arrival causes other forces to be put into motion. How long will it take Ashcom, who is busily nursing his resentment toward her, to realize that there are dangerous plots afoot against Fantine? And how far are these people willing to go to get Fantine removed? Publisher URL: http://buybooksontheweb.com/description.asp?ISBN=0-7414-0699-3

Excerpt
"For a while he kissed her, hard and with a desperate hunger answered in measure by Fantine. Then he let go of her suddenly and still holding her by her shoulders looked angrily into her eyes.
"Have you ever been kissed by a moneyed title, Miss Delmere? Well now you have." And with that he turned on his heel and strode out of the breakfast room.

Reviews for "First Season"

Character makes memorable stories, not mere plot, not punctuation. It’s all about how one enters a situation and how that one reacts; holding one’s chin up or collapsing at the first provocation, fighting to the death or only posturing to fight. And think how much harder all that is to do when one is locked into a high society of no-touch-no-contact courting, tight collars, and devastating personal slights and in-fights.
Gloria Gay’s “First Season” has character, and plot as well, because good plot comes from good characters. “First” isn’t perfect, but neither is Steinbeck, in my opinion, yet I find I love FS enough to keep it on my reread list and to add Ms. Gay’s name to my “read more from” list.
