They talked into the night, forgetting that he was a man running for his life and that she was a woman alone, at his mercy. He slept beside the fire, with a pillow and a blanket she gave him. He had been gone when she awoke, the blanket folded neatly. In the days following that strange night, she went about her business as usual, but with an expectancy that caused her heart to pound as though she had been running. The small house felt terribly empty, the lonliness enveloping her.
