happYness

by Cynth'ya Lewis Reed — Read all 584 poems by Cynth'ya Lewis Reed

If Will Smith does not get an Oscar for best actor of the year, then Oscar needs an eviction notice. ( I also noticed when I posted this poem that today, January 13, 2007, would have been my father's 77th birthday. He died a dreamer, a most articulate man when I was 10 months old. But someone, I think that he helped breathe this poem thru his "baby girl."

Poem Artwork

Dedicated to Jaye Lewis
Born in Collinsville MS, Lauderdale County to Charles Van Perry Franklin Lewis,
and Jennie (Jeanie) Bell Wilson Lewis
January 13, 1930-July 14, 1955
(Thank you Daddy for my life.)

happYness RUNS
hoping it won't trip
when it lost its left shoe
trying to capture tomorrow. . .

happYness HOPES
thinking it just might
. . . just might find favor
in a favorless world

happYness THINKS
giving what it does not have
is a harvest for the future
when the present is everything
except. . .

but happYness!
keeps on running. . .
and running. . .and running
regardless of how many times
life runs over it. . . regardless
of how many smiling faces
pretend to be the real deal
when the deal was raw
from the beginning. . .

and when happYness
feels like it just can't
TAKE no more, then
somehow. . . SOMEHOW
with a silent prayer of
sacrifice. . . and a second
wind that's four months
past due, happYness
looks up at the mountain,
finds a rope, triple-knots that rope
to The Anchor, summons the
strength of 10,000 Samsons,
and behold, before its very eyes,
the mountain eventually moves.

(REVISED VERSION)

happYnesss RUNS
hoping it won't trip
when it lost its left shoe
trying to capture tomorrow. . .

happYness HOPES

thinking it just might
. . . just might find favor
in a favorless world

happYness THINKS
giving what it does not have
is a harvest for the future
when the present is everything
except. . .

but happYness!

keeps on running. . .
and running. . .and running
regardless of how many times
life runs over it. . . regardless
of how many smiling faces
pretend to be the real deal
when the deal was raw
from the git go;

and when happYness
feels like it just can't
TAKE no mo', then
 SOMEHOW. . .
with a silent prayer of
sacrifice. . . and a second
wind that's four months
past due,

happYness looks up at the

crags of  Mother
Qomolangma

takes hold of a hemp rope,

then triple-knots that rope
to The Anchor, and then
summons the strength
of 10,000 Samsons

. . . and behold, before it’s very eyes,

even the grandest roof of the world
can’t help but bow in submission,
and move on out of the way.

(Chinese)
Mt. Zhumulangma (Pinyin)

Mt. Qomolangma (Tibetan)

Mt. Everest (English)

P.S. The Anglo version of the Tibetan word describing what non-dynasty explorers call Mt. Everest, is pronounced the same but spelled two different ways with the English alphabet:

1.  "Chomolungma"  used in several books,  and the original which is used in this poem with the "ch" pronounciation, 2. "Qomolangma"

(In honor of ancient Sherpas, I selected 'Door # 2.')

Love this thought-provoking and inspiring characterisation, Cynth'ya... both of them! And I like the moulding and adaptation that happYness does to suit - such a flexible commodity! Yes, have to agree that a smile, a shining spirit and joyfully attitude DO move those mountains BIG TIME! Great and gracious write. Love it, thank you, Kate xx

I must try and see this now!
This is excellent Cynth'ya!

Happiness is within, not in the objects offered for our enjoyment!
We must be content, and if we are not, then disposition is the only change needed!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful message~

Your father, lives on...to dream is to dream...
Love and Peace~

An awesome story, an awesome, inspiring movie; I concur: if the Pursuit of HappYness does not walk away with the top awards, I will never go to the movies again!! Your words carry the message boldly; strongly; I am grateful for the inspiration and lessons your words portray. Thank you, Cynth'ya!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Hope you are well--
